The animal sculptures of Coba Koster: refined realism in bronze
COBA KOSTER / Jul 29th, 2017
Coba Koster (1951) is a classic sculptor, which creates remarkably realistic sculptures of animals, with her preference to birds like owls, pelicans, geese and chickens. Her bronze sculptures all have an almost tangible dynamic, making them much more than a static sculpture of an animal or bird. The characteristic of the animals, their poses and typical behavior, are captured extremely credible in bronze by Coba Koster.

Animal love as a source of creative dynamics
Coba Koster was born in Coevorden in 1951. After her schooling, she moved to Rotterdam, where she followed her education at the Academy of Fine Arts. The childhood years spent by Coba Koster in Drenthe may have laid the foundation for her love for animals in their natural habitat. This fascination with animals combined with an admirable dose of craftsmanship and the ability to study her subjects endlessly, result in highly realistic bronze animal sculptures. The animal sculptures of Coba Koster seem to come alive in their own unique setting. The cat throw her claw to an imaginary leaf above her head, the goose has just discovered a fat worm in the ground and the owl is ready to iron down on its prey with a few elegant strokes of its wings. The sculptures of Coba Koster seem to be shaped in a very organic way, but are very refined. The use of various patina gives the impression of a certain season or natural environment. The white-green snow owl seems to have flown away from a winter breeze, while the warm oak of the Screech reminds you of a warm summer evening.

Creation process in stages
The technique of Coba Koster is unique in some sense, because she takes the complete creation process, from kneading a washing model to casting, finishing and applying the patina in her own hands. With this, she adds her own signature to the bronze creation at each step of the education process. The aim is not to create the perfect imitation of reality, but to bring the character of the bronze animal to life in all its dynamics. Her preference for birds is expressed in the large and very diverse range of sculptures devoted to this species, with the compact, bulky chicken possibly still taking the most prominent position. But also other bird species and mammals, such as winter bunnies, geese, foxes and elephants, are widely recognized in bronze by Coba Koster.

The sculptures of Coba Koster are a constituent part of the collection of gallery Wildevuur. Throughout the year you can admire the lively bronze animal sculptures of Coba Koster in our sculpture garden and (online) gallery. More about Coba Koster can also be found on her own website
