DISCOVER FRANS VAN STRAATEN

Frans van Straaten (1963) is a balance artist that is continuously looking for harmony between force and motion in relation to space. Elegant human figures, derives from the art of dance, are displayed by him in a graceful dance or jump. Powerful animal figures he depicts with the compressed energy of a frozen movement. The opposite movements of his sculptures exceed the limits of the possible so that an enormous dynamics and tension is created. The scluptures of Frans van Straaten play a graceful play with gravity and their position in space.

In fact, many sculptures are a metaphor for a certain emotion, such as a horse for strength, a peacock for pride and a dancer for elegance. Sometimes there appears a touch of humor in his work like the dancing rhinoceros and the prima donna horse. It is clear that Frans van Straaten has affinity with our rich art history. Consider the work of the ancient Egyptians, whose forms were smooth and monumental and the detailing perfected. But also for the later Renaissance he has a great fascination. The expressiveness of Michael Angelo, the intrinsic energies of Leonardo da Vinci, and especially the visual language of Giovanni di Bologna with his opposing movements and the suggestion that the law of gravity does not seem to apply. Fortunately for us Frans van Straaten is capable to translate this mental baggage in to his very own contemporary sculptures that possess both beauty and expressiveness.

Frans van Straaten studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam The Netherlands.
