A SUSPICION OF LIGHT
DISCOVER GERARD VAN DE WEERD
Gerard van de Weerd (1952) is a man of few words, but what he says is spot on. The same applies to his painting. Very tranquil, but oh so evident. He makes his paintings preferably in his studio. With the right music in the background they are set coarsely, then the search begins. Although he paints naturalistic, but not in accordance with reality. His paintings arise during painting. Here he combines freely existing and non-existing elements to achieve an optimal composition.
Gerard World is all about displaying beauty, sense and the right atmosphere. Usually the character of his work is familiar and intimate, like his models in interior. Sometimes a touch of humor plays a role in his work and there arise challenging models on pillars, or geisha's on elephants. The early work of Gerard van de Weerd was in muted colors. However, in recent years his paintings are more colorful, more lived and sparkling. It seems that his models are becoming more self-confident and dare to come more to the fore. But the essence remains the same. Daring omitting details. The merging of models with their surroundings, making them a harmonious whole. The beautiful layering and textures of his paint, which are such a determining factor for the intimate mysterious character. Very strong and expressive, but always understated and subtle.
Gerard van de Weerd studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, The Netherlands.
