Herman Tulp, master of the nostalgic still life
HERMAN TULP / Mar 24th, 2017
Herman Tulp is a realistic fine painter, best known for its intimate, nostalgic atmosphere of his paintings. His works are recognizable by their unique, bright painting style, where sobriety is an intriguing contrast with the use of saturated colors and a touch of magic realism. His wide repertoire includes still lifes, model paintings, landscapes and animals. In recent years, Herman Tulp is especially fascinated by painting female nudes. Until April 9th art lovers can admire a fascinating retrospective of his most recent works at gallery Wildevuur.

From comic artist to young surrealist
Herman Tulp was born in 1955 in Zwolle. His father owned a stationery store, so there was always plenty of drawing material available. Small Herman lived out the crayons from his father's case and drew one comic strip after another, which in his later career as illustrator came in handy. After high school Herman Tulp visited the academy Minerva in Groningen, where he graduated in 1980, majoring in free painting. During his years at art school he developed his characteristic. He increasingly added bright colors and magical realist elements to his paintings. His early works were therefore best to be described as surreal and often had a dark undertone, which was partly inspired by the many science fiction books he read.

Illustrator duo Tulp&Parlevliet
After finishing his studies Herman Tulp began a successful collaboration with Hans Parlevliet. The duo illustrated several books for publisher Kluitman like the Goosebumps series and the cover of the book Crumb. In 1990 Tulp&Parlevliet received the Eppo Doeve Prize for their illustration for The Troll King with Peer Gynt. Due to the emergence of the computer editing programs, this source of income dried up in the early 90s, and Herman Tulp continued his career as a solo artist.

Female beauty as opposed to gloom
As a painter Herman Tulp is best known for his almost photographic-like still lifes. You almost want to to grab one of his painted apples and take a big bite. Although his amazingly realistic still lifes are still a good source of income, his interest in recent years shifted to painting female nudes.

Herman Tulp describes himself as someone who is inclined from his adolescence to gloomy moods. Painting of young women, who are in the prime of their lives, is a powerful antidote to him for what his depressive disposition. Also in his recent paintings, the surrealist symbolism is still present, as in the painting San Andreas fault, where red peppers from the night sky fall behind the model. But the former symbolism has largely given way to lighting, mood and composition. Herman Tulps female nudes are without a doubt beautiful; a bit ethereal and vulnerable, yet powerful, something that is highlighted by a pair of bright red painted nails, a brightly colored kimono or indigo blue cello, which his muse holds on her arm in the painting.

Expositions
The work of Herman Tulp is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the Netherlands. His paintings are often seen in Museum Mohlmann in Appingedam and also are included in the collection of the Drents Museum in Assen. In 2008/2009 his work was represented in the exhibition The surprise of the North; in ancient Groninger Museum. The works of Herman Tulp are an integral part of the collection of Galerie Wildevuur. Until April 9, you can admire the latest works of this northern realist during the exhibition Realistically.
